This short story was a really quick listen on audio, I even listened twice in a row because I felt like I didn’t get it the first time. Reading it again helped me see more value in the story, though it wasn’t nearly as creepy as I hoped. I think I just prefer more modern horror. This old piece is tricky to understand the nuances of.

"[W]ith the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit."

An undeniably classic and influential gothic horror tale. Its extreme literariness can make it quite difficult to follow, but nevertheless, Poe's writing is so beautifully atmospheric.

Honestly I tend to struggle with the language of work’s written around this time but Poe is the champion of ratcheting up and delivering on tension in such a short time.

Definitely one of the slowest-paced works I've ever read.  Poe takes his time setting the vibes just right, which means that it doesn't feel like much of substance actually happens and the ending felt sudden in comparison.
