A high fantasy tale based on Celtic themes, as such it has both spells and swordplay. That the armies are modest and the wizards human makes it fresh, as does the fact that the real focus are the relationships of the main characters across lifetimes, from injury and feud to eventual reconciliation. It's not an action packed yarn and can be quite confusing in first half with the lack of resolution in the situations difficult to tolerate. But it is really interesting and in the second half the threads start to pull together, leaving a contined feeling of merry old pre-England.

I just finished rereading this about nine years after the first time. I really liked it the first time I read it, but I'm having a hard time figuring out why. I didn't like it as much this time.

I was reading it on my Kindle before bed, so maybe I was tired and it was hard to focus. Whatever the case, there were a lot of boring bits. I'll continue on in the reread, and hope the books aren't all worse than I remember.

*soft dnf* 10/10 for the cover, obsessed, beautiful, but despite the classic fantasy comfort vibes sweeping me at the start, over halfway now and Iā€™m just not attached to any characters or the world and my mood has already moved on šŸ˜…
