A Lisa T. Bergren book never fails to satisfy...especially when it involves time travel, love and adventure! Having read the original River of Time series ten times over, reading this new duology spinoff just made me feel so incredibly happy and grateful. So much thanks to the author for this nostalgic, beautiful, daring, and most of all fun series!

i would argue that the first half of this book is by far the best part of the entire duology. and then the last half reads exactly like the entire first book, three winds. as in nothing happens. and then it feels like all of the cool fun first half was for nothing

the characters are ridiculously unrealistic but it is very easy to root for them and their love. also i get it ok they're super hot now please stop mentioning how hot they are in every other paragraph please. i don't know if i can handle one more mention of javier shoving his curls back from his forehead only for said curls to fall right back in place.
ok i do like how zara chafes against the confining gender roles but acknowledges that she does like to feel protected and coddled to a certain extent and that it's something she's gotta keep thinking about. that seems totally valid.
um but also i felt kinda icky about the lowkey justification of the oppression of native americans at some parts??? i wish zara, our 21st century gal who has had access to education, had grappled with that at least a liiiitttle bit more.

i read the original river of time series a loong time ago and loved it. i think i'm def just getting too old for these books. i still do think bergren's a pretty great writer though!!

I really enjoyed this book! Four Winds picked up right where Three Wishes left off and I really liked that. I love Zara and Javier! You felt the struggle that Zara was going through, either stay with the man she loves and the family she gained or go back to her own time.
In the first book Zara's three wishes is to find love, to have a big family and to have an adventure. So you meet her love and family in the first book. In this book she definitely has her adventure! I wish that there was another book to this series but unfortunately this was a duology 😭. It left me wanting to read more about those characters.
If you like Young Adult books with romance and adventure then I recommend this book to you. If you have read it, let me know your thoughts on it in the comments section.

The follow-up to [b:Three Wishes|29337533|Three Wishes (River of Time California, #1)|Lisa Tawn Bergren|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1456405316s/29337533.jpg|47973798] finds Zara, a modern woman from California, still stuck in 1840 Alta California, still a part of Mexico. She's happy to be with Javier and his family ... but quickly the tides turn and Zara is kidnapped by pirates and fighting just to stay alive in a land where she can't wear pants. Even though the setting is different, the story felt very reminiscent of [b:Cascade|9368401|Cascade (River of Time, #2)|Lisa Tawn Bergren|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1433777176s/9368401.jpg|14251927], the second book in Bergren's original River of Time series. I couldn't seem to get as attached to this set of characters.

FANTASTIC ENDING

Wow, this book had so much in it. There was murder, kidnapping, pirates, shipwreck, treasure hunting, and a bit of romance. Who wouldn't love a story like this?!
I loved how the author wove this tell together. She uses beautiful word pictures to help us see the world in which Zara had landed.
I don't know if I could have endured all the things Zara had to. She also fought with the choice of going back (or forward) to her own time. Yet knowing in this time she found her three wishes - adventure, a family, and love.
Would she find that going back to her time?
I guess you'll have to read this book to see what she finally decides, where she truly belongs.
I loved this book and hope you do too!
