I really enjoyed this. I thought the writing style was beautiful and done very well. I did have to pull up the dictionary a few times while reading, but learning new words is never a bad thing.

There were a couple times I had to reread things or that I felt a little lost but I think as you continue through the book things become more clear and easier to understand.

I loved Rabbit and hearing about her life. I feel like I could listen to her tell her stories all day.

Absolutely the most enjoyable most confusing book I have yet to belatedly dedicate to Asian month™️ The way the story is pieced together over the course of the book is simply delightful. The maturing and character building of Rabbit and the Empress through the stories is so well done over such a short span of pages. I feel as though I have known these characters my whole life. The nostalgic tone carried throughout the whole book is the best feeling to have when consuming media. The vaguely magical aspects add the hint of fantasy that ties the whole thing together.

Honestly not sure about my rating. My feelings on this one are very similar to when I read Vo's The Siren Queen: I really respect the writing and enjoy the story, however the magic and atmosphere are left so vague that I felt like the book was keeping me at arm's length. Maybe I'm just not getting it, but I'm not sure that the story-within-a-story aspect really added here? Still, I liked this novella and I'm definitely open to reading the sequel.
