Love it! Simple text- would be great for an art story time. The background info at the end of the book is equally amazing. Did I mention I love this book?

Carle's paintings are beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. "I am a good artist" he writes as he paints a blue horse, a red crocodile, a black polar bear (because that's what it is if the artist says that's what it is!) and even a polka-dotted donkey. Great lesson in the freedom we can have artistically if we choose, and a perfect springboard for an art activity - either painting, or, imitating Carle, painting and then cutting the painted paper into shapes for a collage.

For: animal/art fans; readers wanting a colorful book about artistic freedom.

Possible red flags: some may struggle with the concept (demand crocodiles can only be green, for example).

This book is story about a boy who is an artist and paints animals the way he wants, according to his own standards. This book encourages creativity and individuality and might be funny for children that know that horses are not blue.

I thought that I would have a special affinity with this author and really appreciate this book since I so proudly colored a picture of Jesus purple when I was a young child doing crafts in vacation bible school, but alas I was completely disappointed. Sure, I understand the point of "thinking outside the box" and being creative, and yes, the pictures were colored very nicely with wild, vivid colors, but there was no accompanying story, which is a big disappointment especially since the book is meant for children. Without a story or at least an explanation or a call to action in words kids could understand, telling them to be different, the shockingly colored animals weren't all that exciting and even lost their meaning.

Vivid, glorious illustrations in the author's trademark style. The message is one of celebrating creativity, honoring the amazing Franz Marc. Inspiring and whimsical eye-candy.

My daughter fell in love with Eric Carle books when they did a unit on him in Kindergarten. This book would be no different!

This books is so richly illustrated. The story is simple and perfect for my 2-year-old son. He can name the animals, such as "Purple Fox" (his favorite) and "Black Polar Bear." We love this book.
