I absolutely loved this book. A great example of the author guiding her audience through hard experiences which may or may not be familiar to them in a way that gets you to slow down and think. I’ll prob read or listen to this with my son around 5th grade, the age of the kids in the book. Not every group of 6 5th graders would talk/share like this group, but because Woodson gives her characters this platform, I think readers of any age will be able to go through the practice of empathizing and listening well.

I read this as a read aloud for my 5th grade class. Because the characters are also 5th graders, they really resonated with the book. We read it as part of our social issues unit to educate the kids about real life circumstances that can really happen to people. My students were able to really consider empathy through this book and was overall a great reading experience!

The shifts from flash back to present confused a handful of students, so we highlight them each time, but that was the only "drawback" or difficulty using this book as a read aloud.
