The Reader" is very high standard, and it'll be the measuring bar for any other Schlink novels I read. This one was good but in comparison to "The Reader" it positively paled.”

I had high expectations after The Reader but I found this one a bit less engaging. Perhaps it lost something in translation, or perhaps I missed the point, but I found the language a bit clunky and I found the main character boring and a bit annoying.

I enjoyed this book although not as much as Schlink's first book, The Reader. This had the same type of male character searching and struggling to find and define himself. He has a way of drawing you into his characters. It was a quick read too at 250 pages/short chapters. I recommend.

The story took about a hundred pages, but once it gained momentum I loved it. It's the story of Peter Debaur and his quest to find and meet his real father. It's called homecoming because his story is related to homecoming stories from WWII and The Odyssey.

I don't really have anything to say about Homecoming. As a fan of The Reader I guess I had reasonable hopes for this novel. For the most part the story was mildly entertaining, there is nothing to blow you away or even hold your interest for longer than a few minutes at a time.
