Reread: 31/07/2020 - I think I’d forgotten the second half of the book and how epic it was. I loved this story and the feelings haven’t changed. I’m glad I got to reread it again and hopefully can get to the second book now.

Ahh!! My first V.E. Schwab!

Phenomenal, so much fun! I was hooked the moment I picked it up and I couldn’t put it down! I can’t believe I waited this long to read it!!

Disappointing. A very slow book where nothing really happens.

Knocked my socks off. VE Schwab is a master of the darkness and bitterness with this book seemingly written to emphasize the two. Incredible.

Darn it, I like most of Schwab's stuff, but this one didn't work for me.
It reads like a text adaptation of a graphic novel.

The 1-star reviews already here pretty much say it: it's sketchy, it's boring, and it uses an annoying jumping-around-in-time structure.

Eli and Victor are uninteresting characters who implausibly leap to a conclusion that proves right, carry out experiments that implausibly work every time, and then end up chasing each other in some kind of death pact. The side characters have a chance to be interesting, buit we don't see them much and they are clearly tools for V & E to use -- at least at the halfway point when I bailed.

Summary for me: half not-my-kind-of-book and half just-not-very-good.

It’s a funny experience, reading this book when you’re studying psychology. The reason this is a 3 stars rating is because, I didn’t found myself wanted to pick up this book. I didn't care about the characters and much of the story. I want to re-read it tho so I can see if it wasn't just because I wasn't in the mood for it.
