I picked this up because I really enjoy Beast Boy and figured i would start with the first book in the series. This version of Raven really appeals to me as this version of her origin story seems more grounded in a relatable reality than what we usually see in the comics. While some times I think there was a little too many jumps in time/place/space between chapters or panels even, the artwork and story were both solid and really added a lot to an already well-established character.

This was a fun and straightforward read that delivered the hurt/comfort. I’d have enjoyed a little more insight to the characters or plot, but I definitely enjoyed this. A good weekend read!

I really enjoyed it. Raven’s origin in the context of New Orleans voodoo culture, New Orleans culture, found family dynamics, and incredible artistry, was a visual and literary treat. Max is hilarious, and the introduction of Slade gives him a clever complexity for a possible villain. The release of Trigon from her amulet and Max’s reveal of her spiritual powers was incredible, just the art and dialogue were both on point. It was charming and heartfelt and I know that my love for this book will only grow when I read it again.
