Awesome take on Raven's backstory which helps to explain her detached personality.

I really enjoyed it. Raven’s origin in the context of New Orleans voodoo culture, New Orleans culture, found family dynamics, and incredible artistry, was a visual and literary treat. Max is hilarious, and the introduction of Slade gives him a clever complexity for a possible villain. The release of Trigon from her amulet and Max’s reveal of her spiritual powers was incredible, just the art and dialogue were both on point. It was charming and heartfelt and I know that my love for this book will only grow when I read it again.

I can already tell this is going to be a fantastic graphic novel series, this first book alone has absolutely gorgeous art and a well-written storyline that is easy to follow but intriguing and mysterious. I loved learning about Raven and her backstory, as well as seeing her relationships with her family develop. The magic and lore introduced were very interesting and make me excited to see more once she hones her powers. Overall great graphic novel and I am hooked, lovely collaborative work by Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo. I discovered his art a long time ago on twitter when he was just making Teen Titans fanart, so I am very happy for him and pleased to see his work become official in a DC comic.

I loved the art style in this! It had a kind of watercolor effect, and I love watercolors in graphic novels. It's one of my favorite things. The story was pretty well done too, giving background to characters that readers might be familiar, they might not be.

Honestly, I love this line of DC YA graphic novels for that. I think it's a good way to get teens and kids into comics and a clearer way. Because let's be honest, getting into DC or Marvel comics can be confusing. Overall, this one was a quick read, but definitely entertaining!

Raven was my favorite character on the Cartoon Network edition of Teen Titans. Glad to see another interpretation of her character.

I ended up accidentally reading this series out of order, and began with the Beast Boy book instead. I had no prior familiarity with the Teen Titans beyond the surface level, and was able to follow both books fine despite the mix up and lack of other knowledge.

I enjoyed the art style and simple color palette!

The plot is a little predictable, thanks to the need to be an origin story and the younger target demographic. The side characters aren't terribly fleshed out, and I think this installment suffers from a lot of the problems as Beast Boy's story, in that the primary function is to have them discover their powers and leave home to meet each other.

I'm a little hesitant about the inclusion of Louisiana Voodoo, and the way it is kind of lumped in with the superhero powers and Raven's supernatural heritage, given that I don't believe the author is from this background herself. I have been looking for own-voices reviews addressing this concern, and will edit this review to link any that I find.

Overall not a new favorite, but I'm still interested in continuing with future installments.

What a fun ride! Raven has always been one of my very favorite characters, ever since the days of the original Teen Titans animation on Cartoon Network and I loved this retelling of her story. I liked that she has an actual past and an actual family in this one. And the coloring and illustrations! To die for.
