The not-so-distant future and a combination of climate change and deadly pandemics have forced mankind to seek a new home in the stars. Over half the earths population are already on the moon, awaiting colony ships to take them into the new world. Ben chooses to remain, with one sole purpose left on earth, to protect the last remaining grizzly bear from would be poachers who want to take a unique souvenir with them into the stars.

Some good characterisations, and I loved some of the descriptive prose used for the wilderness, but it started to lose my interest and become a bit predictable in the 3rd act.

It had a solid message about the need to protect nature at all costs and how much we could/should be willing to sacrifice. I appreciated it for that take.

This book isn’t bad, it just feelings like it’s missing something. Weird dream sequences that don’t feel like they add to the plot and flash backs that are unneeded. The characters are okay but the escalation of the problem seems overall weird. And it has a twist that I found very meh. The idea was there the execution just didn’t feel like it carried it.

The cover and the blurb is what originally caught my attention. It quickly reminded me of the game Firewatch where you play as a park ranger during wildfire season and his only companion is his coworker on the Walkie Talkie.

Other than the video game, I found the characters to not be likable. The only character I did like was Poppy. She is a hermit who lives in the park and ends up helping out our main character.
