There’s good reason for this to be a classic. I hadn’t read it since middle school and was pleased to find that I still enjoyed the story. There’s a lot to think about.  Even though it’s a story from a young person’s perspective, we can see the flaws in the adults and she still feels like a kid.

Rasistinen ja misogynistinen kokonaisuus. Käytetään huolettomasti n sanaa ja "naiseutta" halveksitaan kerrassaan monipuolisesti.
Häiritsevintä kirjassa on sen valkokeskeisyys. Valkoinen kirjailija kirjoittaa kirjan valkoisista ihmisistä jotka "kamppailevat" rasismin äärellä. Lähes oksettavaa ajatella miten kirja asettaa tummaihoiset objekteiksi joita Atticuksen kaltaisten ihmisten pitää ikäänkuin suojella ylempää. (Erinomainen esimerkki white man's burdenista) Jatkaisin ränttiä mutten jaksa.
Toki kirja heijastaa aikaansa ja on ollut varmasti edistyksellinen kirja joskus, mutta relevantti se ei enää tänä vuosituhantena mielestäni ole. Kirja nykypäivänä suosiollaan vie alustaa monilta muilta yksinkertaisesti paremmilta rasismista kertovilta kirjoilta.
Sinänsä nämä seikat ovat harmillisia sillä teksti ilman sen kontekstiaan on laadukasta ja esimerkiksi oikeudenkäynti oli kirjoitettu todella onnistuneesti.
