Debilitating in its tension and petrifying in its themes, The Invisible Hotel is a horror novel unlike any I have read before. The usual horror trappings appear: dark hallways, unexplained hallucinations, strange interpersonal connections relating to personal mental struggles. But there’s something more here—about family, culture, war, terror, unwanted and misunderstood conversations with strangers, and everything in between—that exhales and inhales within the pages. Ham’s writing is purposeful in its specificity and gripping in its firehose moments. So much discomfort. So many truths awaiting to be discovered. The solutions and the anxieties will carry me onward.
Graphic: Panic attacks/disorders
Minor: Miscarriage, Death of parent, and Gore
