Stupid, confusing, unfinished stories. Perhaps you need to have detailed knowledge of the culture to understand the references.

I read this book for the UAE in the read-around-the-world challenge. I enjoyed the glimpses into everyday life and found the role of women in the various stories interesting and sometimes surprising. Some of the stories felt like something was missing; not just that they were short, but that there was an ending that just wasn't there.

Well, after having started this book in June, I finally finished in December! I reeeaallly wanted to like this book more than I did! The stories were interesting and the concept of the book aswell - several short stories that are just slices of life of people from the United Arab Emirates- but the writing tyle let me down on a few of them.

A few of these stories had this sense of completion at the end, but a few just felt like a scene within a longer story, so it just kind of let you hanging, ya know?

But the reason I read this book was to get a taste of life in the UAE and to try a new genre, and I' still glad I did!
