I liked the themes this book was exploring, but docked it a star because of the way it handles disability, treating it as an explosive plot device rather than exploring disabled lives in any thoughtful way.

The climactic incident of the story involves -- among other things -- a little girl hitting her head on a pole and falling into a lake. Though she is rescued from the water, she has brain damage afterwards. The author doesn't really grapple with the life Laura has after this accident: We hear a litany of things she CAN'T do, and that's it. Her disability is treated as ~~tragic~~ without any consideration of how actual disabled people live their actual lives.
