I don't remember how I heard about this book but I was expecting it to be horror. Some of the stories could be considered horror, but I'd consider most of them magical realism. I liked them! I can't remember a few of them, but some of them were so evocative that I'll be remembering how they made me feel for a long time.

No se si me gustó mas la historia de la niña exorcizada o la de las explosiones ocasionales de cabezas de niños, pero bien.

There were a couple of really strong stand-outs for me - the Emily Dickinson story for sure, and Mount Chary Galore. The rest were good, and I enjoyed reading this overall; I’m just not sure how much it’ll stay with me.

I very very rarely read short story collections. I find them frustrating. But this one was just plain fucking weird. And I think I liked it. I think?

If nothing else, it has one of my favorite pieces of cover art I've seen in awhile

Some great stories in this book - a particular favourite was "Word Doll".

Ford does best when his work is tied to reality, and the stories in this book with a grounding in our world - Midwest society in particular - show that.

This collection really pulls myth and fairy take characters out of their stories and puts them into this world. The stories vary so much from fantasy to satire to SF to magic realism. I think what does set this apart from many retellings (which this is not, but uses the same themes) is that it keep the violence of the original stories. This was wonderful.

There was a lot of variety in the stories, which was great. As with most short story collections, some stories were stronger than others. Fun October spooky read

This was my first introduction to Jeffrey Ford's work and I was smitten. The greatest praise I can extend to any fiction writer is that their writing made me say the phrase 'and then what happened?' Each individual story had to be consumed in one sitting because I simply could not put it down. While not all the stories are to my taste even the ones I enjoyed the least had me enraptured. I so look forward to reading more from Ford in the future.
