One of my favourite holiday picture books. If you haven't already, I recommend watching to movie after you read it.

On the night of Christmas Eve, a young boy goes on an adventure with many other children to the North Pole on a steam train. At the North Pole, the children see hundreds of elves and meet Santa Claus and his reindeer. The young boy is chosen to receive the first gift of the year, and he asks for a sleigh bell, which only rings for those who truly believe in the magic of Christmas.

A classic Christmas story that can be shared with the whole family.

The Polar Express has been one of my favorite books since I was very young. It doesn't really feel like Christmas time until I read it. I wish that this magical world was real!

One of my all time favorite children's books. I even really like the movie too! The illustrations in the book are wonderful and I LOVE the spirit of Christmas. So fun to read with children especially if you have a bell for them and watch the magic in their faces!!!!!!!

On Christmas Eve a boy struggles to stay awake, intent on hearing the jingle of bells from Santa’s sleigh. What he hears instead are the sounds of “hissing steam and squeaking metal,” and when he goes to the window he sees a train pulled up outside his house! Grabbing his robe and slippers he ventures outside and is just in time to climb aboard before the train sets off for the North Pole.

What a lovely Christmas story; it reminds children (and adults) of the magical power of belief. I wish I could still hear the jingle of bells.

The illustrations are richly detailed. I enjoyed examining each picture, looking for the train as it moves across the landscape. The expressions on the faces of the children aboard the train were marvelous, whether filled with excitement, or consoling the boy on the trip back home.

I had never seen this book until the movie came out, so I never read this to my children, but I did find it in the library and "read" it. The illustrations are so beautiful, rich and detailed, it's enough to make a person weep.

I never read this book as a kid, and it's odd to read it in the middle of summer, but an insistent Mini-Me meant a couple of readings. A sweet story that I'll probably like even better when it's not 25 above outside. :)
