I love learning about Harriet. She was such a strong woman and fought for what was right her whole life.

'Harriet Tubman' by Mª Isabel Sánchez Vegara with illustrations by Pili Aguado is part of the Little People, Big Dreams series of picture books.

Araminta "Minty" Ross was born into slavery. Her early life was rough and inspired her to do something about the way things were. She was helped to escape her life, changed her name, and helped others escape on the Underground Railroad.

This is told with colorful illustrations. Because her early life was so hard, it may open up questions with young readers. This isn't a bad thing, and we should be willing to discuss hard things with our kids. Harriet Tubman used her hard experiences and it propelled her into action. The lesson is clear and told in a simple way for the young.

I received a review copy of this ebook from Frances Lincoln Children's Books, Quarto Publishing, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

Although wording is clunky at times, especially for reading aloud (as likely intended), and the illustrations are sometimes a bit misleading (unlikely Tubman took large ocean-going steamships up the river), this is a gentle treatment of Minty "Harriet Tubman's" story addressing many of the facts of her life. There are no smiling slaves, but there are not any scary overseers either. Some white allies are shown near the end, but most people shown are African American. The picture of Harriet on a $20 bill is not explained at all; text on that page is "Because little Harriet knew that you have to use all of your strength to stand up for yourself so that you can stand up for others, too." I appreciate that the book does not end in 1865 and discusses (briefly) how life was still not easy for African Americans, even though they were no longer officially enslaved. A much better book than many other older treatments of Harriet Tubman.

I always enjoy reading books from this series whenever I can. This series does a great job of distilling information quickly about a wide variety of people. I know a lot about Harriet. As a kid, she was one of the first people to really enrapture me and catch my attention. I tried to read everything about her I could. This is a great first introduction into the whole life of a giant of a person.

Even as an adult, I learned something from “Harriet Tubman.” I liked the information and the art. Kids will, too!

(General series review) These are fabulous stories about great women and men in history (for the most part). The illustrations are great for kids. There is a brief history on the person that explains how this person contributed to history and matters

***I received an eARC from NETGALLEY***

It had some big concepts like “desitny”, “Northern States”, “network of safe houses”, “explosives”, “unequal”, “rights”, “property”.

But it was a decent read with decent pictures and my five year old could follow it.

It had a good picture to sentences ratio.
