This book was well-written in that I had goosebumps reading the majority of it. Not recommended pre-bedtime reading though! It was nice to actually read the accounts of the Amityville horror prior to seeing the many film adaptations of these events.

The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson I grabbed at Alice's Little Haunted Bookstore in Mystic Village (Mystic, CT). This is the story before the several movies produced about the terrifying house in Amityville, NY as collected by Jay Anson from the Lutz family and Father Mancuso about their experiences living in the old DeFeo house about a year after Ronald DeFeo murdered both his parents and his all his siblings.
Can you blame a family of 5 for jumping at the chance to buy this giant on the water house for $80k? I can't. I honestly blame the haunting on the fact that they were like "we don't have enough furniture... let's buy the mirrors and bedframes!" Bruh, I dont care how skeptical you are why are you buying bedframes people were murdered in?!?
The Lutz family spends 28 days in this house and leaves without taking a single personal item. A pig named Jodie telling little girls that they are really an angel, doors being ripped off hinges, a blood red hidden room in the basement, mediums saying they can't stay, a priest suffering from physical ailments anytime he tries to even call this family, and demons on the staircase!
I flew through this book waiting to see what was going to happen next. It's supposed to be scary, but books don't really scare me. The movie scared me plenty.

Scary. As. Hell. The first time I read this book I was a kid and I was staying home sick from school. I started it during the day and when it got to night I was too engrossed to put it down. When it got to be time to go to bed, I was too terrified to turn off the lights and go to sleep. I stayed up all night, finishing the book and scaring the shit out of myself. Woah. Years later, my girlfriend and I read the book out loud...and it scared the hell out of us both. Lots of fun.
The downside is that Jay Anson is one of the worst writers ever to have made a lot of money doing it. He's like, Dan Brown bad, which is saying something. That this book is scary anyway feels like proof that Satan is real. Or something.
I find the question of whether or not it actually happened completely immaterial and frankly, no more than marketing.

Całkiem przyjemny horror. Ja preferuję dużą ilość akcji w książkach, które czytam, tutaj tego niestety nie dostałam jednak bardzo mnie to wciągnęło. To jak zmieniała się psychika postaci było dość inną rzeczą niż w reszcie tego typu horrorów. Oni nie byli tylko przerażeni. Same "anomalie" jakie działy się w tym domu nie były niczym nowym na te czasy, jednak kiedy to wyszło wieżę, że wzbudzało emocje. Teraz też trzyma klimat.

This was fine. It was interesting to read in order to get the context for this iconic horror story. I definitely believe that much of the story is fabricated. But, it was certainly creepy!
