It's pretty cheesy but most people probably know that going in. I suspect - or more really, know - it's relationship to "truth" is tenuous but it's a lot of fun and really good at what it is trying to be.
2.5/5 I knew some about The Amityville Horror from pop culture and am familiar with the house with windows like Jack O' Lantern eyes. I knew it was a tale of possession and haunting; a story of terrors that only usually exist in the imagination of horror writers and filmmakers. But this really happened! Or ... did it?
When I finished this book, I started doing some follow-up research on what happened at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York in the mid-1970s ... Without saying too much, it seems like there is a lot of disagreement about how true this story is. Sure, some of the incidents forming the foundation are 100% based in truth and the book is certainly narrated as if it is all true (which adds to the creepiness and suspense). But I walk away having serious doubts about the tale and Mr. Lutz, especially after learning that he dabbled in the dark arts. So, if you are looking for non-fiction, you may leave a bit skeptical. But, if you are looking for a good and scary time, it should serve you well.

I wanted to read this just because it's such a common piece of the horror genre. But it was boring. Whether or not the story is true (and it seems pretty clear it was all made up), it's just dull. Glad to have checked it off the list, but disappointed it wasn't even creepy.

If you look at this as the work of fiction it so clearly is, it's not bad. It's actually pretty gripping in places, even if it starts to feel a little repetitive and padded out as the days of the Lutz family's stay at Amityville pile on. Overall, I'm torn - it was a solid read and I don't regret it, but I also feel like it's a cash grab that shouldn't exist in the first place. I'll go 3/5 because, as a story, the good mostly outweighs the bad. It's decent schlock.
The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson is a fast-paced retelling of the supposed real-life paranormal experiences of the Lutz family, who moved into a house with a dark history. The book blends fact with some eerie storytelling, creating an unsettling atmosphere. While it’s often criticized for exaggeration and questionable truth, it’s still a gripping read for fans of haunted house stories. The tension builds well, though the writing can feel a bit dated and repetitive at times. Overall, it’s a quick, spooky read, great for those who enjoy supernatural tales.
