Chilling. Worth a read. A short novel and a memorable one.

I liked this, I was surprised! I think it was a very well told story and even found myself becoming a little spooked reading at night alone! I think the contention/discourse around the truthfulness of the Lutz account is well discussed within the book and I didn't at all feel like it was written to sway me one way or the other. It felt more like the author was talking to you about this story that he had heard and all the other parts he had found out around it.

I had never watched the movies and didn't know much about it apart from the heavy pop culture stuff, so I got this basically out of curiosity and my curiosity was certainly met!

DID NOT FINISH

Terrible writing. Could not deal

Took this with on a camping trip and it was ok as a cheesy over-the-top horror story. The writing is terrible (you cannot scare me by ending your sentences and chapters with excamations!). More than half the supposedly scary events are comical.

Also after finishing the book I read on here that the book was using another family's tragedy, which made me hate it more. Also, connecting demons somehow to Native Americans also seems in poor taste and has not aged well.
dark tense fast-paced

The Amityville Horror is the story of George and Kathy Lutz and the hauntings they and their kids experienced living in a house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, NY, for 28 days from late 1975 to early 1976. The house is also where Ron DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family one year earlier.

As a note, I have read up on some of the debunking of this “true story.” I can see both sides of what is being told. But whether you believe in this sort of thing or not, what happened to the Lutzes is pretty terrifying and makes for a great read all the same. Accept it as a fictional ghost story, if you must. It was entirely enjoyable no matter what, IMHO.

It's a fun ghost story, try not to get too caught up on the "true story" aspect every horror movie includes the "based on a true story" title card.

All of the key horror / haunting tropes are included, almost to the point of ridiculousness. Murder house built on an Indian burial ground / old asylum vibes. Ghosts & Demons & the devil & fallen angels & evil animals. Ritual sacrifice & orgies & levitation & secret rooms full of blood & walls the ooze & children and dogs that see things.

I just wish they had included more of a narrative of good vs evil. Instead we get: a hapless broke family and a cowardly sick priest. Can't knock it too hard, seems to have set the tone for early horror movies.

*psycho theme music violins* Preeeeetty spooky!

Honestly super super good, I just wished that the spooky shit had more details. But I guess since it’s based on true events they wouldn’t stretch it more than they did. All around very spooky and I thoroughly enjoyed!
