Hilarious. Great surprise about 2/3 of the way in involving a hungry lion and a noisy little boy.

A boy's pet penguin won't talk no matter how much he asks or teases. Then the boy gets eaten by a lion and the penguin defends him because he loves him even if he doesn't talk all the time.

You can't really go wrong with the blank, deadpan stare of the titular penguin if you ask me. I am slightly biased because it's dedicated to Ben also, but the character design and colouring is brilliant, the contrast of noise and silence, there's some great story beats, and a lovely ending. Excellent fun.

A quick read, with uncomplicated illustration. This book explores the idea that people express themselves in different ways, that some people are much quieter than others but their friendship is just as valuable.

When a little boy receives a quiet penguin as a present, he quickly becomes irritated by the penguin's lack of action. In the end, however, the penguin shows a skill that greatly increases the boy's appreciation. Cute for older preschoolers and younger elementary students.

My year 1 class adore this book. We're learning about Antarctica and they request this book all the time. They think it's hilarious.
