The silliness of the concept of "getting" the moon is the winning element at read-aloud time with this book. The girl asks Papa to get the moon, so he does: a big long ladder (pages fold out to make room) is all it takes. When the moon wanes, it's a good size to transport back to the girl, and then when it waxes, it's back in the sky and getting larger each night. An obvious tie-in for units about the moon.

I didn't really like the spoiled brat of a character. At first it starts of with, "Papa, please get the moon for me" and next thing you know it's: "Papa, please get the new Mercedez-Benz for me", "Papa, please get the new iPhone for me". For a children's book, this conveys a terrible message for younger kids. Did not like.

Loved encountering this book in the wild among all books for young readers πŸ’™

I love its shape and size as a board book, the way it introduces the moon as a majestic object in the sky not at all far from us if we think about it… if we put our imagination to use and compare it to the grand scheme of the universe 🌌

Eric Carle truly has some incredible books out that I’ve yet to read!

In this tale, you see the lengths in which a father will go through to achieve the desire of their children to feel loved, to play and learn a little something along the way πŸ₯°πŸŒ™πŸ˜‡

Nothing makes a father happier than fulfilling their part in making their children happy and keep their imagination and curiosity ever growing ✨

For: readers looking for a whimsical book with an emphasis on father-daughter relationships.

Possible red flags: some may find the ending too abrupt or confusing.

Love the illustrations and the open-the-flap options. A good one for a moon or space themed storytime.

Carle's richly dark palette, vibrant brushstrokes, and the gentle face on his luminescent moon are the highlights of this lovely little fantasy. I love the twist on traditional versions of the daughter-wants-the-moon stories: usually the frantic father tries to trick his daughter into believing in some sort of substitute for the unobtainable moon, and then finally has to come to grips with the fact that he's going to have to admit to his child that daddy isn't omnipotent. Instead, Carle's polite little girl's daddy handles his offspring's impossible request by, well, doing the impossible.

Science connections to phases of the moon; can address misconceptions about moon "getting smaller" with moon phases;
