What a fun read! If you like the Stephen King “It” vibes mixed with a little “Are you Afraid of the Dark” I think you’ll enjoy this one. It’s an easy read and I really enjoyed the pace of the story. Will be reading the sequel!

This book started amazingly! It gave me all the nostalgic feelings I hoped to feel while reading this. However, within the last four chapters, this book lost me completely.

✨MR NIGHTMARE✨ had some super fun moments! He was an interesting character that I wish I knew more about. The characters were great and I enjoyed their easy going friend dynamic! It was definitely more of a Goosebumps read than a Stephen King, but I had a lot of fun reading this one! And I will admit, it did give me nightmares

I did not like this book. The premise was good, but the writing seemed sloppy. The characters annoyed me, and the ending just didn't feel right. It just wasn't a good book.

This was a fun read!
I received a free audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

So I feel like this read (or heard?) as a middle grade book. Take out all the swearing and this would be a great middle grade horror book. The main characters are middle school and high school age and definitely seem older in some ways. Maybe it’s like a mix between middle grande and young adult?

Anyway, on to the story - a group of kids start a Nightmare Club. Tell a scary story and if it causes your friends to have nightmares then you get a point! But one of the stories feels a little too real… John, Marcus, Mary, Chuck, and Anna spend their Saturday nights telling scary stories and racking up nightmares while one of them is hiding a very real nightmare come to life. But eventually the truth comes out and things go sideways.

Mr. Nightmare introduces a fun concept that could potentially make for a second book or at least another book in this world.

The narration was done really well. All of the voices were unique and it had a very good flow. Amber Dekkers did a great job.

Probably more of a 2.5 stars, but this book didn't make me angry about anything, so I'm rounding up.

This was a "just okay" read for me. The writing often felt summarized or perhaps just detached, like the narrator was telling you, the reader, the story in a way that doesn't make you feel as though you're experiencing the story alongside her (a little too much tell, and not enough show).

Then.... there's Mr. Nightmare himself. Hoo boy, he might have been scary if he didn't show up constantly and act like an entitled bratty teenager. Every time he opened his mouth, I had to roll my eyes. Not to mention, it's like he goes out of his way to ensure that he wouldn't possibly get what he wants out of the kids? It's like he's so dead-set on fulfilling the label of "the villain of a teenage coming of age story" that he forgets he actually has a thing he wants/needs to acquire.

Everything else was okay. The ideas, if not the execution, was okay. The characters (not including Mr. Nightmare) were okay. The writing style could be better, but at least I could understand what was physically, literally happening at any given point in the narrative (something I can't say about certain other books I've read, believe it or not--not by this author, mind you).

I know this feels like a particularly negative review, but other than my stated issues, this book is an okay read. I never personally wanted to DNF it, and it's quick enough to get through. Plus, so many other reviewers seemed to adore this book, chances are good that you (whoever you are, lol) will enjoy it as well.

A surprising story full of nostalgia with a spooky atmosphere, touching passages, and a shocking but sad ending!

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Amber Dekkers playing the main character Anna (the POV of the book). Amber impersonated her really well resulting in a very easy listen.

This is a story about a group of friends that decide to create a nightmare club, meeting every week at night in the woods just to tell scary stories with the aim of giving each other nightmares and keeping scores to see who gave the most nightmares!

To my surprise, the scary stories weren't the focus of this book but just a mean to dive into the characters and the antagonist and tell what happened in those years after starting the club.

Although probably for a YA audience, I really liked it and found myself remembering when I was a kid playing outside with friends without a care in the world and everything was an adventure. Only that the kids in the story have to deal with tragic events that will change their future..

Really recommend it if you enjoy reminiscing about your childhood, spooky atmosphere and getting emotional here and there.

Thank you to Joe Hempel for a code of the audiobook and this is my honest review.

A solid three.

This book was a good read in between my heavier reads. It was a story to tell around campfires with old friends that someone follow you back home and you question noises that creak and whistle in your home at night. Being that the book deals with 4 teenagers, I think it really summed them up all. Generally, in all books I read, there is too much ego and drama amongst teens, but this group was friends and it was pleasant to see. it is a stark difference from some pretty significant books selling highly well these days and one reason they ended being on my DNF list. Nothing everything needs to be so drama heavy.

Mr. Nightmare is a newer urban legend. [a:Joe Scipione|19550165|Joe Scipione|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1602491555p2/19550165.jpg] did a wonderful job of crafting an underground classic to be retold in tongues in many fashions in many ways.
