This novel somehow has you rooting for a murderer. Vic Fowler who kills people to distill their essences into perfume that recreates certain memories with supernatural detail. What starts as a money-making scheme to get rid of some sleazeballs who somewhat deserve their harsh fate slowly snowballs to destroy everything and everyone Vic loves and the entire life Vic built. 
This review is a little difficult to write because the author artfully refrains from gendering the protagonist throughout the whole book, without sounding awkward or forced. Now I try to write about Vic in the third person and don't know what pronouns to use. Writing without pronouns is hard! Mad props to the author (though it helps to write in first person).
