I'm going to call this a prequel although it acts as a stand alone story set in a historical time period from the series based on the same world.
If you've read the Verindon series you would have seen mention of Vashta and Brandonin, the two main characters in this story. If you haven't read the series, it doesn't matter because this book is an excellent starting point to the world. In fact, I'd probably recommend starting with this story as an introduction to the world the author has created as it's clear this is a sci-fi action story with a dash of romance, whereas the genre of The Heir (Book 1 of the Verindon series) is not clear in it's genre until about half way through. This book also has a prettier cover, if you're like me and judge books first by the cover.
The story is fast-paced with well developed and believable characters. A lot of people are mentioned, but a glossary is provided if you can't recall who is who.
Overall it's a well-written, engaging story and I'd read any other book the author sets in this world.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely adored this thrilling book - it's every bit as good and as edge-of-your-seat action-packed as the previous books in this series. Stringer manages to pull off a sci fi epic that is, at once, an homage to spec fic of the past and something completely fresh and new. Her characters jump off the page and into the reader's heart and her "monsters" are suitably terrifying. Highly recommend!
