Zhang Ailing actually wrote this novel(la) in English, then translated it herself into Mandarin (秧歌). The title is so fascinating to me; yes, 秧歌 [yānggē] could technically be translated as rice sprout (秧) + song (歌), but it's such a curiously literal translation of a term—yangge—that's hardly ever translated literally. It's akin to translating the city "Paris" as "Cauldron" just because the name originates from the Latin name for the Celtic tribe Parisii (from Transalpine Gaulish *parios, from Proto-Celtic *kʷaryos, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷer-)
