I appear to be reading a lot of books with religious undertones lately but surprisingly I am enjoying them. I particularly liked the first book in the Reprobation series by Catherine Fearns. An interesting novel that blends the natural and supernatural in a rather unique. Dr Helen Hope is a lecture in eschatology, the study of death, judgement and the destiny of humankind but she is also a Calvinist nun, her life devoted to atoning for a secret crime. When a body is found crucified on a beach in Liverpool she ends up forming an unusual alliance with a suspect, Mikko Kristensen, the lead guitarist in death metal band Total Depravity.
They aim to work together and go on the trail of a rogue geneticist who they believe holds the key, not just the murder but to something much darker. Also on the trail is the cynical Scouse detective Darren Swift. He finds himself face to face with his first murder case that might just make him confront his own lack of faith as a series of horrific crimes drag the city of two cathedrals to the gates of hell itself.
Reprobation sees religious belief, doubt and science meet in an unique and interesting supernatural murder mystery. I have to say I wasn’t so sure I would enjoy this but I most certainly did! I adored how the main three protagonists all play off each other and seem to add where the others might be missing, so Helen’s faith to counter Darren’s lack of it and so on. I also enjoyed seeing Helen and Mikko seemingly be one step ahead of Swift most of the time which was a reminder of shows such as Father Dowling Mysteries.
In terms of the plot I enjoyed the pace and twist and turns as well as the science and supernatural elements melding together to make something enjoyable and surprisingly believable. While the novel is short it is concise and the plot kept me hooked to the end. I have already started book two!
