Bowen's beautifully polished style and sharp eye for human behaviour are already evident in this first novel.

I suppose it was the shock of being alive-- oh, how can I explain to you? I had had no idea we were as real as this. I'd never realized it mattered so much.

This and many other realizations about the nature of life and relationships slip into the text unexpectedly through Sydney and Mr. Milton, the principle characters, who seem on a tenuous trajectory to another world sans momentum. Another work of brilliant understatement, "economy of language," and acute insight to the subtlest shades of movement within the heart, The Hotel shows that Bowen was a master of her craft from the beginning.
