I definitely had too high of expectations for this one. I totally get the high ratings because the quality of the writing is quite good.

Here is where it didn't work for me:

-The voices of the narrator and Rodeo were Too Much—especially given they are from the PNW... It just didn't check out for me. It was all very precious and quirky and "full of spunk."

-There are some troubling issues with the premise of the novel. Mental health issues and grief should be taken seriously. I appreciate that the author is trying to address these, but there is no doubt he is romanticizing it.

-At some point the collection of passengers felt a little too much like tokenism for me. With Salvador there was some character development, but not for the others. Maybe I'm being too harsh.

Overall it was well written and well paced, so I'm giving it 2 stars.

A very sweet story! A bit too easy for me though.

I was so angry with Rodeo for parts of this book - him not being able to handle his traumas and refusing his daughter her right to reminisce about their family. Him being too emotionally immature to be there for his child. But I also loved that the adults were flawed in this book, because people are flawed. And that made them even more loveable in the end.

I don’t find books often that makes me cry and laugh at the same time. That leaves me hopeful even though it can be heartbreaking at times. What a gem ❤️

Woah, hold on, let me dry my eyes! Holy smokes this book is so cute. So charming. SO fun. I love a good character driven novel and I fell in love with Coyote from the very first chapter when she gives that kid her slushie. She is unrealistically cool. No 12 year old is that charming and cool headed and funny. She’s the best.

This story hit me hard and I cried on and off for about the last hour of the book. I did listen to it on audio, so there I was folding laundry and wiping away my tears. Because I KNOW that feeling that she felt so deeply. When my dad passed away the whole world wanted to move on and pretend he never existed. Nobody wanted me to be sad about losing my dad. And I didn’t get anything of his. Not a journal, not a shirt, not even a picture. It was a mess. But things have made their way to me as I’ve gotten older. So here I am 21 years later and I am just holding pieces of paper that he and I both wrote on and they just mean the world to me. So I truly understood and was very emotionally invested in this story.

The writing is amazing. It’s fast paced and fun. I would recommend this book to any human who likes to read. It was very sweet with a satisfying ending too. So glad I read it.

This was a fast and pleasant-enough read, I guess, but I can't recommend it. The wise-beyond-her-years Coyote does not seem anything like a real 12-year-old girl. In fact, none of the characters felt real, though I liked each them well enough.

This book is really a special book. It made me cry so much. I loved it, but it was a lot. Especially since I went into it thinking it would be a nice break since it’s for middle grades… boy was I wrong! Still loved it and would recommend it for any age.
