This is sometimes a hard book to enjoy, but there is such depth in the characters: all of them full of flaws but also trying their best, in their own ways. It is a stark reminder that we all have a different perception of each other and our interactions - sometimes it feels easier to be angry with someone than to try to see from their perspective, but it is not often helpful.

The only reason this book gets 4 stars is for its 5 star writing. I’ve never read Franzen before, and not sure I will again. It has been a while since I read a book as depressing as this one. It was hard to have empathy for all but a couple of the characters. BUT, the writing was amazing and I’m sure my reaction was exactly what the author intended. I will check my happiness-to-depression ratio when the sequel is released before committing.
