A cute palette cleanser book. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is one of my favorite stories and was used as the inspiration for this story. I appreciated the author’s use of contemporary realities in this story but I was hoping for something more whimsical like that of Charlie’s story. I also struggled with understanding what the target audience is for this book; at times it feels middle grade and other times young adult as well as adult. The romantic elements were a nice add but seemed immature for characters at their age. Overall, would recommend.

This book is good if you just want an easy, light read. The plot is fun and whimsical, but that's about all it has going for it. It's definitely more of a "tell, not show" type of a book. I prefer the authors to show, not tell.
I didn't care for the main character, but I liked Masterson and the artsy guy. The main character is too whiney, self-centered, and entitled, even when she needs to be focused on adopting the child she is trying to help. She is also about as deep as a puddle.
I had no real reason to root for her. Instead, I found myself wishing that something would happen that would challenge her and cause her to reflect on herself and really grow as a person. Sadly, I think the events in the book just reinforced her sense of entitlement (even Masterson and Hugo kept saying how worthy they thought she was), but I never saw any reason for her to be more worthy than some of the others.

I was leaning toward 4 stars but then this story made me tear up multiple times so that automatically bumps it up a star 🥲 Definitely one for those that love happy endings!

I loved this a lot more than I expected. It’s so sweet and character driven. It got me out of a reading slump! It’s an incredibly sweet story and there’s nothing more to it than that. The reader has a sense that everything will work out the whole time, but in many ways that’s the joy of it. It’s a bit predictable, but again, I think that is the sweetness of it.
