Where Dreams Descend by Janella Angeles

3.5

I heard the story had strong magic circus vibes and, more importantly, was loosely inspired by Moulin Rouge! & The Phantom of the Opera. And I guess it was? Kinda? Idk I may have had way too much hope going into this. After all, with a pitch like that, it had A LOT to live up to.

Gotta give credit where credit is due though, I liked the atmosphere of the book. That's where I could appreciate some of the aforementioned influences. The general story is fun. Like, who doesn't enjoy a good magic competition right? So that part of the plot was cool to read about.

My gripe is mainly with the characters. They fell somewhat flat to me. I did like the voice work in the audiobook. The actors did a good job. It was just that the character personalities felt very generic & typical for YA Fantasy. It wasn't bad, just kinda average for me.

Overall, I found this to be just okay. I'm not mad that I read this though, I would've been insanely curious otherwise. I suppose I'm glad that I sated my curiosity with this one.
