update: reread it and it really is surprisingly insufferable. I originally listened to it as audio and the imagery was haunting and I guess I didn't pick up all the details. rereading it was much harsher
While I agree that the story is about a huge narcissist, it doesn't really mar the beautiful imagery of the world or the story. I couldn't get it out of my head for days and ended up retelling it (very poorly) to my kids on a long drive.
