This is the 3rd book I’ve read of the author’s and my biggest issue is that content seems to overlap between books.

This was really interesting. I listened on audio, and I always enjoy when an author reads their own books.

I love Caitlin Doughty, and this book was no exception. I really enjoyed learning about death rituals around the world from her and her narration was excellent. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in the death positive movement or just learning more about death rituals.

Continuing (somewhat overlapping) where Mary Roach’s Stiff examined the deceased human body, Doughty explores to cultural beliefs & practices of human burial rites. Frustrated by the commercialization of these practices, Doughty, a mortician, seeks out international passages of death celebrations. Lacking some of the writing prowess of Roach, this author provides a little more in candid case studies and illustrations. Definitely learned some practices I’d never heard of before!

I came to this book having watched many episodes of Doughty's web series, "Ask a Mortician." If you like the series, you will like the book and more or less understand her views on death and the "death industry" in the West, which are present throughout. Even if you don't know the series, it's an interesting tour through the many death customs that we in the West might think "shocking" or "overly macabre," but can bring comfort and relief to those who practice them.
