It’s really intriguing how in this first part of the Tokyo Ghoul series there are so many moments and scenarios the characters go through that are really like a lucid dream. It’s as if the characters are aware they are in a book or maybe not exactly aware, but have a slight gut feeling of what will be happening in the nearby future.

Kaneki Ken enjoys reading, and particularly books by Takatsuki Sen (which is not a writer IRL, I checked). He often goes to have a drink at Anteiku with his best friend HIde. And it is there that he first saw a this girl whom he was really intrigued by, because she was also always reading and even better, she reads books from the same author.

“I’m not the protagonist of a book or something, but if I were to write a book with me as the main character, then it would be a tragedy.”

There have been a lot of mentions of Ghoul attacks in the area lately, but Ken and Hide don’t exactly worry about it, they kinda let it go past them and even ridicule it a bit, making funny drawings of how they think a ghoul would look. For me it is a refreshing take on the entire humans being eaten alive, because this time there aren’t any brainless zombies. This time it is a predator that looks like a human, acts like a human and is nearly indistinguishable from a human. This time it is a Ghoul.

The girl Ken fancies catches him looking at her and decides to go talk to him and even ask him out on a date. Ken is over the moon and he and Rize go on a dinner / book date. But he should have considered her excuse for barely eating a bit longer, claiming she was on a diet. After the dinner they go home and Rize asks Ken if he wants to walk her home. She lives in the area where there have been a lot of ghoul attacks lately and she doesn’t want to go there alone in the evening. That should have been your second trigger warning Ken, but love makes you blind as they say.

Turns out Rize isn’t all that human, and she only has the hots for Ken’s body. Not too muscular, not too thin, the perfect shape for a nice bloody steak. Rize attacks Ken in an isolated alleyway near a construction site, but before she can finish him off (no pun intended), a terrible accident saves Ken and eliminates Rize. Rize is crushed by steel beams that collapsed from the construction site. Ken is left lying on the ground, severely injured. After bystanders who noticed the collapsing of the steel beams call the emergency services, he is transported to the hospital to have an emergency surgery.

This surgery might have saved his life…. But it also turned it upside down. Ken finds himself to be the first of his kind, a half human half ghoul. He now has to explore this new reality and find a way to exist in this violent new world and balance it with his human counterpart.

“What's wrong isn't me, What's wrong is the world.”

You’re in for a thrilling and exciting ride into the world of ghouls, this is one heck of a start to the series. Beautiful illustrations, really thought through story, and it keeps you wanting to know more.

this is my first ever manga read, and i was so excited to start this that i started literally the day i got it! i really loved the show, and i’ve heard people say that the manga is better, so i decided to try it out! the characters are just as loveable as they are in the show, and the plot is just *chef’s kiss.* this is a great introduction to the plot and the characters, and obviously not too much action has happened yet. i love the art in this, it looks so cool!

This was the very first manga I'd read and it took me a long time to want to pick up another one after this. I could hardly understand what was going on with the artwork in this one.
