Ich muss wohl mal Krimis von Agatha Christie gelesen haben, als Kind vermutlich, erinnere mich aber an keinen davon. An dieser Autobiografie war vieles interessant, ähnlich wie bei Vicki Baum die Tatsache, dass da jemand, der meine Urgroßmutter sein könnte (Jahrgang 1890!), ein ganz nachvollziehbares Leben beschreibt. Wenn Fotos dabei wären, würde sich unvermeidlich größere Distanz einstellen, aber in Textform ist so ein viktorianisches Leben gar nicht so sonderbar, es klingt eigentlich ganz normal. Auffällig auch hier die vollständige Privilegienblindheit, ja, Privilegienvernageltheit, noch extremer als bei Beryl Markham (und ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass das geht). Aber alles, was sie über ihre Schreibgewohnheiten und -verfahren und ihre Vorstellung von sich als Autorin sagt, ist uneitel und interessant.
Was ich inzwischen (111 Autobiografien gelesen in den letzten zehn Jahren, sagt Goodreads) über das Genre dazugelernt habe: Man darf im Alter auf keinen Fall über "die Jugend von heute", "die Gesellschaft von heute", "die Mütter von heute" oder "die Ärzte von heute" schreiben. Die klügsten und sympathischsten Menschen werden sofort dumm und hartherzig, wenn sie sich diesen Themen widmen. Reisebeschreibungen ("wie sehr ich Florenz geliebt habe! die Farben!") auch keine gute Idee, wobei die hier noch relativ interessant waren. Tiefpunkt meiner Christie-Sympathie waren ihre Ausführungen über die Todesstrafe. Man muss wohl beim Autobiografieren der Versuchung widerstehen, irgendwelche Meinungen zu äußern.

Enchanting!
I read the book slowly, putting it aside to read others -- shorter ones -- and taking it again. And how jolly it was! The autobiography of Agatha Christie turned my attention to mystery books, to be honest. Her books, modern authors' books, and others.
And also this book proved, that I like read biographies, digging into other peoples' stories. No I want to read Come, Tell Me How You Live.

Excelente biografía contada por la misma Christie. Nos habla de sus padres, abuelos y de su niñez. Es un recuento muy completo de su vida pues la escribió cuando contaba con 75 años.
Agatha es mi escritora favorita y me encontré su vida muy interesante. Descubrí que era alguien muy modesta y generosa, con mucha sabiduría y alegría.
Me gustó que hablara tan bien de su primer esposo, a pesar de lo detestable que yo me lo encuentro y de lo mezquino como se comportó con ella. Me hubiese gustado saber sobre su desaparición pero ese tema no lo toca.
Lo más interesante para mi fue ver como esa gran autora, la dama del crimen, inició su carrera casi por accidente y más como un hobby. Otra cosa muy interesante fue conocer las costumbres de la época victoriana (de su niñez) y como se vivieron en Inglaterra las dos guerras mundiales.
Muy recomendado a los fans de Christie.

There are echoes of some of Christie’s characters throughout in her writing, and her real voice coming through. Some of the ideas she expresses are very stuck in their time, but it’s a fascinating read and feels like she’s having a proper conversation direct to the reader.

The first half of the book is all about her childhood. It was interesting for a few chapters but she finally got into adulthood halfway through the book. I started jumping forward to finally get to adulthood. Every once in a while she would briefly talk about her characters and where story ideas came from but nothing really in depth. Bit disappointing.

So engaging to read and it is incredible how much she remembers. Christie has a way of describing even mundane things in a way that you will enjoy it. However, if you are looking to find out more about how she writes her books or her scandalous disappearance, this is not the book for you. She tends to focus on the small, ordinary details of her life throughout two husbands and two wars. There were some passages towards the end about archaeology and her travels through the Middle East that I did find a bit boring but I think that's just personal preference.

I'd say 3.5 stars - what I read of it was pretty good. She is a talented writer, but her outmoded ideas about the measure of women, servants, and culture are a bit jarring to hear in contrast with her normally strong heroines. She certainly lived a full and vivid life though, and I cannot wait to pick this book back up again.
