This is my first Tommy and Tuppence novel of Agatha Christie's. I did not find myself as attracted to this husband and wife detective team as I am to Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple. I seem to like this novel more than some others who have reviewed, but I do agree that it can drag. There is a lot of dialogue and chapters or Tommy or Tuppence interviewing people who may have information about the case and then debriefing each other at the end of the day. I also found the ending much less satisfying than I had hoped. There are many clues and details as to the historic murder and espionage that go unresolved or are inadequately explained. I found some of the political aspects of this novel interesting, and I wondered if Agatha Christie were using the character Colonel Pikeaway as her mouthpiece to put forth her views of economics, the European Union (called the Common Market), and Fascism. In a way, this novel felt like a way to put forth an anti-fascist message. Overall, I still found this to be a relaxing and somewhat enjoyable read, but it's not my favorite of Agatha Christie's.

compared to other Christie-books is the plot rather flat and anti-climactic. the dialogues are often forced and repetitive - too bad, the story was really promising in the beginning...

I didn’t dislike it as much as some people do in these reviews. I agree it rambles a bit and she did not write her spy novels as well as her full mysteries, but I found the rambling and loose threads organic to Tommy and Tuppence. There were also times where I did wonder if anyone bothered to edit before publishing.

Probably the worst book I have read of Agatha's so far. I can't believe this book was written by the same person who wrote books like "And then there were none". Most part of the book is full of dialogues and hardly any action. There is nothing like a puzzling mystery. Listen to gossips, talk to people. Repeat the same facts and talk about previous adventures (N or M). That's it. I kept thinking that the last part of the book may be fast paced, but sadly even that did not have much to offer. Pretty disappointing book, considering that it is the last book written by her.
