Nice wrapped package of short stories

The theme that ran through the entire book was the theme of acceptance. Acceptance from others and acceptance of self. I liked how it was a mix of short stories, novel inverse, and graphic novels. So make me laugh, some made me cry, some made me confused. Overall I enjoyed it.

Wow wow wow. This book was fantastic! I came in with the expectations that it would be all non-fiction storytelling of people’s experiences in rural life, but it was so much more interesting and diverse than I expected. Will be recommending this to others.

Super nostalgic for me. I'd read a dozen collections like this. No matter where they take place they all seem to remind me of home in one way or another.

A YA anthology of 12 short stories, 2 stories in verse, and 2 comics that explores the diversity of rural America. Great #ownvoices representation all around, including disability, sexuality, and race/ethnicity. I think it's an important challenge to the prevailing stereotypes of rural communities, without painting an overly rosy picture either. There were a couple stories that didn't vibe with me and brought down my average rating to 3 stars, but overall I really enjoyed this collection!

As a former small-towner, I enjoyed this! It was a pretty quick, engaging read overall (some of my favs were "The (Unhealthy) Breakfast Club" by Monica Roe, "Fish and Fences" by Veeda Bybee, "Best in Show" by Tizah Price, and "Island Rodeo Queen" by Yamile Saied Mendez, while a few others didn't really click as much for me). I think it's always a little tough to get teens to pick up anthologies for leisure reading unless they have particular ties to the subject or are die-hard fans of specific authors included, so I think this might be a hard sell for a lot of kids in my particular area. It might be more popular in more, um, rural areas. Also good for classrooms looking for short stories.
