I saw this book listed in one of the articles with the best books of the year and decided to pick it up. Had I read it at any other point in my life I would have enjoyed it more, but in 2020 I want my fiction to serve as an escape from the violence and ignorance that has become more blatant in the U.S. recently.
This book's violence is graphic almost from the get-go and the descriptions of violent acts are very detailed throughout the book. They literally made me flinch. The author is also very well versed in all things car related and the driving scenes are particularly vivid thanks to his expertise.
Beauregard's story is heartbreaking. A whole host of bills are due and his garage is struggling thanks to a car repair franchise that set up shop nearby. While he has tried to avoid a life of crime since getting married, he knows he needs to be the getaway driver in another heist if he wants to keep his head above water.
Knowing that he should know better, he takes a job from a guy who has already wronged him in the past and things continue to go downhill from there.
I did not mind the lack of a traditional Hollywood ending, but I did think that there was one important plot point that was left up in the air.
