I am incredibly sad to say goodbye to this series. Ingrid made for a wonderful protagonist—thoughtful, feisty, clever. The author has a real knack for writing a child’s perspective while not making it grating or tiresome, and he never infantilises her, but on the same hand doesn’t make her seem like an adult in a child’s body. Writing children is hard and he does it so well. Larger threads of plot occur around Ingrid which you as a reader, with your own adult perspective and experiences, can quickly ascertain but Ingrid is still too young to grasp. The mysteries were tight and interesting. Just wonderful. I sincerely wish there were more! I could read many more of this series. Such a shame.

"Into the Dark" by Peter Abrahams is the third in a series of YA mysteries with 13-year-old sleuth Ingrid. The three adventures occur only months apart in the series' universe. Once again the plot is muddy and involves something like a conspiracy involving Ingrid's grand father. And, Ingrid sort of solves the mystery. But, it is all a bit confusing as it involves long ago war secrets and present day financially nefarious real estate deals. A bit weird. Still it is entertaining.

I think the audio version affected my perspective of the book. I was annoyed that at times, Ingrid seemed to react or say things in a manner much younger than her 13 years. The main antagonists were not as well imagined as previous books, seeming to be stereotypes or parodies. That said, the book tied up a lot of loose ends that had been building in the background, and created an interesting plot. I figured out several of the twists long before Ingrid did, but it was fun seeing her assemble the clues and come to the right conclusions. As in life, the book does not conclude with a perfect, happy ending - there are still things to deal with and life goes on. I would not be surprised (or disappointed) if there were more books added to this series, designed only as a trilogy (for now). This book is meant for readers younger than me, and I think that it's perfectly suited for the age group. Highly recommended!

This is the first book in the series that read. I enjoyed the suspense in the story. But, I thought the beginning was somewhat slow because we didn't know much about the murderer until later on.

I enjoyed the first two books in this series a great deal. It was my "go to" series to recommend to younger teens who were looking for mystery stories. There's not a lot to recommend after you've graduated from Nancy Drew, but aren't quite ready for Agatha Christie.

I found this book frustrating, however. It's disconcerting to always be two or three steps ahead of the character who's supposed to be figuring out the mystery. Maybe Ingrid's hormones are starting to get the better of her, but she seemed a lot sharper in the first two books.

This one has a kick-butt ending, though, so I'm glad I finished.

Caution for animal cruelty, however.

Another excellent entry in the series. Ingrid's Grampy is arrested for the murder of a conservation officer, and Ingrid knows he didn't do it. As she investigates the case, she gets drawn into spooky circumstances and brings out details of the town's past that were long hidden. Great mystery and good characters.
