Fun characters and a nice breezy style. Some of the references feel a bit dated in a post-Covid post-X world but that's unavoidable. The secondary characters felt a bit thin, but that also works with April's endearing(?) self-absorption.

Pretty good for a debut from Hank. Written well and leaves you wanting more (and there is a sequel). The audiobook is also well-done.

every time a new plot point happened in this book i said wow i literally could never have guessed that! i really did not like the main character for most of the book but i also could see myself doing all the things she did so i guess that was the point.

“‘you came to observe us, to test our reactions. did we pass your tests?’
‘i don’t understand,’ carl said again.
i struggled to rephrase the question. ‘humanity, what do you think of us?’
‘beautiful,’ carl replied.”

need to consider this book for a while…

Okay buckle up, I have a looot of thoughts about this book!

This book managed to do something really profound to me. I can't quite grasp what exactly it is but I enjoyed reading it so so much.
I also had a big case of book grief after finishing it and had to immediately start the second one.
The book is so funny and sarcastic in a very relatable gen z way, while also providing a LOT of thought provoking material. The perspectives and insights into the different characters were incredibly well written. I originally thought to put 4.75 ⭐ simply because I was annoyed at April and her 'bad' decision making at some point. But after sitting with it for a bit, I realised how incredible it is that the author managed to write a character that feels so much like a real, tangible person! No one ever tried to tell the reader that April was behaving correctly and even her future self harshly criticized her. Her thought process and character was explained so well that I found it hard to see how she could've acted otherwise even though I badly wanted her to do ANYTHING else. This book also has some great plot twists which I didn't see coming (even though there was thickk foreshadowing lol) and it's whole plot felt super original and intriguing to me.
All in all I think I took some very valuable points and views with me and I have high hopes for the second book <3
