my first agatha christie book! an excellent introduction, a more lighthearted mystery centered on a disappeared scientist. theres a subtle romance, a satisfying twist. not as thrilling as i would imagine most agatha christie's are? lower stakes mystery. overall a really fun read for a pallet cleanser

It’s not Dame Christie’s worst thriller, but…it’s still a thriller and she really didn’t have a knack for those. I actually really liked the opening, but, eh, the rest of the time I was just acutely aware of how a different writer could have turned the same premise into a more suspenseful, twisty story with better-developed characters. (And managed the reveal at the end with no need to put anyone in blackface.)

Have they made the movie of this one? They should. A twisty, pacy story set before the time of mobile phones and internet.

While this book is certainly readable as are all Agatha Christie's work it feels very rushed and a bit wild. I spent most of the book wondering what was happening and it was only in the last chapter some stuff made sense but unlike her other works it didn't feel satisfying. This book is more a spy thriller story and Agatha doesn't excel at those based on this story. It feels like she is trying to shove a spy story into a detective stories suit and the thing just wont fit. The romance if one can call it that is awful. Unless you really want an Agatha book and have read everything else, or are really curious what Agatha's version of a red scare spy story would be, I would give this one a skip.

Low key the most enjoyable part of reading this book was being able to understand all the lines in french.
(First time reading an Agatha Christie book, though reading other reviews, it seems like this one is different from her usual style, so hoping the next one I read I'll like better!)

Not Agatha's Christie's typical novel, but a quick, entertaining read! Reminds me of the old-timey thrillers on Turner Classic Movies.
