I laughed, I cried, I completely and utterly fell in love with Bud (not Buddy) the main character. Set in the depression era, a young black orphan finds himself in some appalling circumstances, but often hilarious as described by clever Bud. He has several adventures and meets several different people (some good, some bad) as he sets out to find his daddy after his mom passes away. This book is based on true social and economic issues of the time and depicts hardships faced by all people during that era. This is a book young readers can asked their grandparents about.
This was one of my favorite books growing up; I’m happy that it still holds up! Funny, endearing, and full of heart, all while talking serious issues like race and poverty.
This is a great historical fiction novel set in the 1930s about a boy who is looking for his father. The book is humorous in many parts, but also sad. The audio book is fantastic because it incorporates jazz music, which helps to evoke the setting and the characters.
I don't remember what year we read this... but we listened to it in Elementary school over audio.
LOVED this book! I didn't want it to end.. I wanted to see the relationship flourish and see how H.E.C. acted afterwards. Bud was a lovable character and the story really was great and described the time wonderfully. The characters were great too! Really liked this book.. It's no wonder why this was a newbery medal winner!

And my son gets to learn how Black people were treated in the place where my family was living at that time.
