I had heard of Jessica Shattuck's previous books but had not read any personally so I was not sure what to expect.

Last House is more of a story that has some references to historical events but I would not call it historical fiction. The story starts post WW2 and continues for decades focusing on two families. The house (Last House) could be considered a character of the story. I didn't feel connected to any of the characters.

This is a case, I believe, that not all books are for all people. It wasn't that the writing was poor. I just found the story to be boring. I was forcing myself to pick it up and after 30% I have decided to throw in the towel.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Audiobook
I really got into the chapters from Nick and Bet’s perspective and found the more recent stuff less compelling. Still overall I really liked this story and thought the author had a lot to say about family relationships, parenting, and motherhood in particular.

I could not care less about the people in this book. Sounded promising but fell incredibly flat.

I really enjoyed the family saga nature of the book. Seeing how we are shaped not just by those that raised us but the world around us as well.

A historical drama/family epic, starting post WWII, continuing into the radicalized politics of the 60s, and continuing into pretty much present day, all with the backdrop of a beautiful old house in the woods of the Northeast Kingdom, Vermont. I enjoyed it, and it brought up some very interesting historical perspectives.
