good on kate dicamillo for changing the book referenced in this and finding a way to learn and evolve and have this be reflected in her classic work.

This book is somewhat like a Littmus Lozenge. I didn't particularly connect with it when I first read it, despite having some similar experiences to Opal. It wasn't until I could relate to the Preacher that the book truly resonated with me. Gloria Dump's line about holding on to someone who wants to leave absolutely clobbered me. (student book club, reread)

Myself and my 3 children (ages 10, 8, and 5) all enjoyed this book. It is a wonderful family read-aloud.

This story is just as precious as the movie. I would recommend both in a heartbeat. You are never too old to hear about a girl and her best friend (an odd dog) and learn some life lessons along the way. Great, quick read.

Simple story with no strict plot lines. Cherry Jones read the audio book and While I was not a big fan of her little house series she reads this one perfectly. It has some sad themes (death, abandonment, jail, alcoholism) but I think a my four year old handled it pretty well and the plot is simple enough for a young kid to follow. Caught him grinning in the backseat many times!

I really appreciate the voice of this book, and the pleasure of being told a story by a child. I like this book, and will reread.
