This was a devastatingly beautiful book. Ocean Vuong's prose and writing style really suit the story and tug on your heartstrings.

This was good i just wasnt an enamoured by it as i thought id be, the first half might have been a lower rating tbh but it pulled itself up, the writing was really nice but sometimes it felt like it was trying to hard to be nice

‘only the future revisits the past.’

‘"Everything good is somewhere else”’

‘To destroy a people, then, is to set them back in time.’

‘You once told me that memory is a choice. But if you were god, you'd know it's a flood.’

‘I remember it all because how can you forget anything about the day you first found yourself beautiful?’

‘We were exchanging truths, I realized, which is to say, we were cutting one another.’

‘Let me tie my shadow to your feet and call it friendship’

‘Let no one mistake us for the fruit of violence but that violence, having passed through the fruit, failed to spoil it.’

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would. It was written so so beautifully and made me feel so many emotions. Vuong uses such descriptive language you can really see what is going on and understand well what is happening and what he was feeling. I don't think I'll ever stop thinking about this book.
