This was honestly such a funny book. The humor was amazing, I laughed so much.
Daphne moves in with Miles after their significant others break up with them to date each other, childhood friends who just had to break off a wedding and crash two lives apart. Though without spoiling things, it works out in both Daphne and Miles favor. So what better way to get back at their trash ex’s than to fake date each other?
Miles and Daphne had such a great dynamic, they were hilarious together, friends before anything else genuinely worked so well. Both of them learning how to trust people again, healing from heartbreak and their past.
While this did have some more serious moments character history and their childhood traumas coming into play with their lives still. I thought the character development with this was done really nicely.
For the most part things are lighthearted and a simply funny enjoyable read.

As a long fan of Emily Henry's work, I was very excited to pick up her latest release.
"Funny Story" follows Daphne and Miles. Daphne thought she had the picturesque life: a successful, gorgeous fiancé, a job she loves, and a beautiful house that she was slowly making home. But all of that is shattered when her fiancé, Peter, tells her that he wants to call off their wedding so he can pursue a relationship with his longstanding, best friend, Petra. With nowhere else to go, Daphne moves in with Petra's ex, Miles. But maybe this new living situation will not be all bad.
This was such a sweet romance, and it is definitely one of my favorites from Emily Henry. There was just the right amount of spice, and the character's chemistry was radiating off of the page.
Miles is the epitome of the perfect guy. Although he is flawed and definitely has his own things to work through, he was always so supportive of Daphne. He was the perfect balance to Daphne's sometimes obsessive ways. Daphne needed to learn how to relax, enjoy life, and decide what she wants and go for it, and Miles showed her that she was worth it.
Daphne was such a wonderful character and I found her to be highly relatable. She is a librarian, and a really creative one at that. I loved the portrayal of her working in a library and showing that it is not always the picturesque world us book lovers think it is. Daphne also goes through some growing moments when she learns how to be a better friend, which I really appreciated seeing. She develops a friendship with a character and realizes that she can make her own happiness no matter where she is or who she is dating. Friendships are so vital for human connection and having a few great friends in your life can help to improve romantic relationships because there is not so much pressure placed on the romantic partner.
Daphne and Miles have amazing chemistry, and I really enjoyed watching their relationship develop. They start off as strangers who are bonded by this really traumatic breakup, but the more time they spend together, the more a friendship blossoms, and that is the foundation for a great relationship.
This novel has some other plotlines going on in the background and I thought Emily Henry handled them exceptionally well. For example, Daphne has a strained relationship with a parent and that reaches a major climax in the story, but it did not take away from the budding romance between Daphne and Miles, in fact, it enhanced it. Elements like this make the story feel more authentic, and really keeps the interest of the reader.
I highly recommend this novel, and I look forward to seeing what Emily Henry writes next!

Emily does it again. She makes me fall in love with characters that are so real, I feel like they’re mirrors of myself or friends I’ve made throughout life. I loved Daphne and Miles. Not only is it apparent he fell first, but he also fell harder. I love that for Daphne. I really like the peaks of family drama that came through in this one! I liked that sometimes, people are just shitty and we have to deal.
I loved how fun and petty this felt at times. That first kiss was iconic.
This one may be my favorite. Don’t tell Beach Read.

Compared to other Emily Henry books this one was up there for me. It was written very well and was not your typical roommates to lovers trope. I’d say it was closest to Book Lovers and would recommend readers who enjoyed it to pick up this book as well. Spice level would be 4/10 on my rating, and was mostly tension.

All hail Emily Henry! Another amazing read from one of my favorite authors. She really understands the complexities of relationships. As someone who has complicated feelings about family, I connected so hard to Daphne and her struggles with her parents, partner(s), and friends. Daphne's insecurities surrounding being capable of being loved and her struggle to learn to trust in others was so real and familiar and real. The characters are complex and broken and make mistakes.
It's also another Emily Henry that makes me want to move to a small town in Michigan on the lake and live my best life. Finally, I rarely see a book that features a librarian be so true to life. I often see them as some kind of sappy cliche, when life as a librarian is so much closer to the one portrayed in this book. Yes, there are wonderful parts where you get to connect with others through books, but you also have to clean vomit off the floor and deal with creepy callers and people who get mad at you because you don't know their Gmail password. Emily did her research and, from one librarian, it's very appreciated!
