I studied some ideas presented in this book in philosophy, and it was finally time for me to read it and experience them first-hand.

It was okay, however

"He would flog her to death with a rubber truncheon. He would tie her naked to a stake and shoot her full of arrows like Saint Sebastian. He would ravish her and cut her throat at the moment of climax. Better than before, moreover, he realized why it was that he hated her. He hated her because she was young and pretty and sexless, because he wanted to go to bed with her and would never do so, because round her sweet supple waist, which seemed to ask you to encircle it with your arm, there was only the odious scarlet sash, aggressive symbol of chastity."

is still hauting me to this day.
The MC's hatred toward women in the first part of the book was just annoying, and it made it hard for me to enjoy the book.

I didn't enjoy reading this book. However, that could very well be because it just wasn't my style.

I thought the plot was drawn out more than necessary, and that issue was not helped by the writing style. The first part seemed to be primarily focused on introducing the world to the readers, which was sometimes fascinating, but other times I failed to see the relevance of it. Later sections in the book felt like chapters from a political science textbook, which again, were sometimes fascinating but mostly boring.

I can't deny that 1984 did provide some interesting material to think about, and it did spark a conversation between my dad and I about politics. There was a lot of food for thought in this book, and I do appreciate a book that makes you think. Overall though, I couldn't find it in me to actually enjoy reading 1984. But if the idea interests you and you don't have a problem with the style, by all means, give it a shot.

At the end, humans souls are breakable, but it would take a lot of power that none of us have it!

Interesting.

By most counts it is not a great novel. But it is such a sticky idea that it permeates culture and is infinitely good for allusion and example. I say read it, because it contains so many cultural touchpoints in it. But don't expect a well written masterpiece.

Maybe I'm uncultured but this book was incredibly boring. I got through about half and decided to call it quits. I ended up reading the summary online out of curiosity and can honestly say I'm happy with my decision not to double down and push through.
